Colleen Mixan Mikaitis

Colleen Mixan Mikaitis is a trial attorney and while primarily concentrating her practice in the area of medical malpractice, sexual abuse and assault, and nursing home abuse litigation, she has worked on behalf of victims of negligence in all types of personal injury and wrongful death matters. Prior to joining Taxman, Pollock, Murry & Bekkerman, Colleen practiced medical malpractice and nursing home litigation at another prominent Plaintiff’s personal injury firm in Chicago.

Colleen has been recognized in the legal community as a force to be reckoned with and was named by Chicago Law Bulletin as one of their “40 Illinois Attorneys under 40 to watch” in 2018. The award is bestowed upon the top “40 Under Forty” Illinois attorneys under the age of 40, for their outstanding achievements on behalf of clients, their contributions to the legal profession, and their commitment to their community. Super Lawyers Magazine has also honored Colleen by selecting her as an “Illinois Rising Star” consecutively from 2015, through 2019.

As a student at John Marshall Law School, Colleen completed an externship with federal judge John W. Darrah in the Northern District of Illinois in the Summer of 2012. She was named to the Dean’s list for several consecutive terms and received a CALI Award for Illinois Civil Procedure. In addition to her schoolwork, Colleen worked as a law clerk for two Chicago-area personal injury firms. Her experiences influenced her decision to pursue a career in personal injury litigation and taught her the importance of nurturing client relationships. “I enjoy getting to know my clients so I can better understand how their lives have been affected, including physical, emotional, and psychological injuries. Colleen grew up currently resides on the South Side of Chicago, where she attended Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Political Science. Colleen is actively involved in her community as a Board Member of A New Direction (“AND”)/WINGS Leadership Council, where she and her husband are raising their three children in the St. Barnabas Parish.

• $3,500,000 settlement involving the death of an eleven-month-old infant due to a Chicagoland hospital’s failure to timely recognize and treatment worsening RSV.
• $3,500,000.00 settlement involving a plaintiff’s attempted suicide at an inpatient freestanding psychiatric hospital.
• $1,375,000.00 settlement for a victim of childhood sexual abuse and assault while a patient of a confidential educational provider.
• $1,365,000.00 verdict in Cook County on behalf of a ninety-eight (98) year old woman against her cardiologist for the negligent increase of her blood thinner medication leading to a coumadin overdose and severe bleeding event.
• $1,200,000.00 settlement for a childhood sexual abuse and assault victim by former Archdiocese of Chicago priest, Vincent McCaffrey.
• $1,500,000.00 settlement obtained while arguing pre-trial motions against a physician, pharmacy, and nurse for the prescription of a medication the plaintiff had a known allergy to, leading to her death.
• $1,490,000.00 settlement obtained on behalf of a 40-year-old patient who suffered hypoxic brain damage due to a physician’s administration of anesthesia without the presence of a secure airway, leading to the patient’s untimely death.
• $1,450,000.00 settlement against an internist and radiologist for their failure to diagnose and treat non-small lung cancer resulting in the plaintiff’s premature death.
• $1,350,000.00 settlement against a nursing home and hospital for the development and deterioration of multiple pressure injuries that caused the patient’s death.
• $950,000.00 nursing home negligence settlement on behalf of a patient who became severely dehydrated and malnourished, which lead to the patient’s premature death.
• $600,000.00 medical malpractice settlement involving a surgeon’s negligent transection of the plaintiff’s common hepatic duct during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
